Welcome back to “slow time” as my grandmother called it.
Yes, Daylight Saving Time has given way to Standard Time, as it does every autumn.
Some folks love the shorter fall days, especially going into the holiday season. Others mourn the loss of evening light, particularly those of us who have to drive home from work in the dark.
Those of us who long for sunlight start counting the days this time of year. We “fall back” indeed, into a blue funk. We mark time until the winter solstice passes, and with it the shortest amount of daylight each year.
We begin to see hope in the (very) gradual bit of extra daylight we get each day after that. It gives us the strength to hold on until the blessed day when Daylight Saving Time returns. We live for the chance to “spring forward,” indeed. Evening light gives us energy.
Of course, since the Universe has a sense of humor, those of us who seek daylight often end up married to the darkness fans who dislike “fast time.”
Their idea of a wonderful evening, rather than sitting on a beach until 8 or 9 p.m. to watch the sunset, is relaxing indoors in front of a fireplace as the television shows the 6 o’clock news.
My wife is such a soul. She loves all things winter, from snow to icicles to sweaters and coats and mittens and mukluks. She enjoys the chill and the dark. She hates the heat of June, July and August.
Me, I’m a summer sort, longing for the warmth of the sun, the light of a hot day that says anything is possible, good or bad. Give me that extra hour of sunshine and serendipity any day!
