Ever feel like you’re in a rut? Like you really need to shake things up a bit?
All of us do sometimes. It’s a natural part of the human condition. The question becomes what are you going to do about it?
It’s the same old song, so they say. But there’s a way around that – different interpretations, new languages, new meanings.
Try it with music. If you’re intimately familiar with a particular song sung a particular way, shake it up. Seek out other versions, with different beats, maybe changed lyrics. I guarantee you will discover something new, maybe something that will even inspire you.
Case in point: Joan Baez’s classic ballad “Diamonds and Rust.” When she performs it with an acoustic guitar, it’s a reminiscence of a love gone (mostly) cold. When Judas Priest does it in a heavy metal style, it’s something else entirely.
Or try “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Fall Out Boy’s rendition sounds a lot different than Whitney Houston’s.
If you really want to go down the rabbit hole, find some of your favorite songs sung in a language other than your own. Try Elvis Costello’s recent release, “Spanish Model.” It’s the same instrumentation and production as Costello’s classic 1978 album “This Year’s Model,” but with new vocals by Latin artists singing in Spanish. It’s a refreshing new twist.
You’re not restricted to music, of course. Try reading an out-of-town newspaper (easily accessible online). Pick a city or even a country you’ve never been to, and read the news from that perspective.
Try watching a movie you wouldn’t normally consider. If you’re a horror fan, go for a rom-com, or vice versa. Action fan? Take a look at classic film noir.
Check out every aspect of the world that you can. Then consider your options. If you’re ordering patches, go for a new way of wording things, a new style, a different design. Shake up your routine and watch what happens!
